Sunday, September 14th, 2008Have you driven a Fjord lately?
Have you driven a Fjord lately? The Ford Motor Company is proudly introducing a new 65 mpg Fiesta in November. But guess what? You can’t buy it (for the record, I flipped the image at left so you could imagine it on an American road). This is apparently an ongoing trend, with only two cars available in the states that get more than 40mpg. If you really want an American-built car that gets this kind of mileage, you might try a 1949 Crosley Hot Shot or any of the other beaters on this list. Alternately, you could just give up and move to Europe. You just might be able to justify the move with the fuel cost savings from one the fuel-efficient Europe-only vehicles reviewed here. By the way, a little parting shot for any smug-faced Prius owners that might be reading: a non-hybrid BMW just kicked your butt.
Tina Fey For Vice President

Sunday, September 14th, 2008..and Matt Damon for Minister of Truth
I’ve been waiting weeks for this, and I don’t even have TV. In the SNL clip at left, Tina Fey becomes more “hockey mom as VP” than the person she’s parodying. Which I have to say (no discredit meant to Tina) isn’t hard, because McCain’s VP pick comes across to me like the chardonnay-fueled homebuilder’s wife that tries to cut you off at the supermarket because she’s in such a hurry to get her box-o-wine. Also pretty funny from the last few days is this clip with Matt Damon calmly expressing with a little wry humor the absurdity of the GOP’s pick for VP. As Matt points out, “…you do the actuary tables, and there’s a one outa three chance, if not more, that McCain doesn’t survive his first term…”, and compares the “hockey mom as VP” idea to “…a really bad Disney movie…”.
Bush War Crimes Trial Preparations

Saturday, September 13th, 2008Who ever heard of the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover?
If you’re anxious to see members of the Bush administration prosecuted for war crimes, check out the live stream at left from the “convention” put together by Lawrence Velvel, the dean of the Massachusetts School of Law at Andover. Velvel describes the event as “…a planning conference at which plans will be laid and necessary organizational structures set up, to pursue the guilty as long as necessary and, if need be, to the ends of the Earth…”. Sounds like a party to me. The conference is only taking place September 13 from 9:00 am to 5:15 pm EST and on the 14th from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm, so if you miss it, the video should be archived here
No Wonder I Can’t Get A Date

Saturday, September 13th, 2008But why are there so many single women in Appalachia?
And I thought it was my thinning Papa Smurf hair and “income impairment”. After viewing this interactive map though, it all becomes clear. Adjusting the slider to the age range I find acceptable (30-59; I think I’m being pretty darn open-minded on this!), the town I live in (Ann Arbor) has one of the largest blue bubbles in the US, with 40 extra men per 1000. My only solace is that there’s such a huge gay community here. Meaning either that number is actually skewed slightly, or I can still take a friend of mine’s advice and become bisexual, which, as she puts it, “doubles your chance for a date on a Friday night“. Fortunately, I already have plans to relocate to Albuquerque, which has a nice big pink bubble. By the way, note that there’s a little “link to this map” link in the lower right of the page. It lets you link to the customized map you created with your slider adjustments so you can more easily torture your friends. For more amusing maps like this you might want to check out the Who’s Your City maps on Richard Florida’s site. He’s the author of the bestsellers The Rise of the Creative Class and Who’s Your City
. I’ll just be packing my things now.

Friday, September 12th, 2008It all comes out in the end, dunnit?
Finally, a cause you can get behind. September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month. The elimination of prostate cancer is no joke; with enough effort, it can be wiped out. Get the straight poop on how you can can support the movement and show you give a crap at SupportOurPoops.org. In reality, that site DOES look like a crappy way to support cancer research. For a link you can depend on, check out FightProstateCancer.org’s Zero – The Project to End Prostate Cancer.
