Call me a naïve utopian, but I voted for our current president largely for one reason: the hope that he had the ability to deliver a message that would inspire and galvanize our country in the way that Kennedy did with one speech at Rice University, 30 seconds of which is featured in the clip at left. We rarely think about it, but few things have shaped modern life more profoundly than America’s space program. Computer technology, medical technology, agricultural studies from space, telecommunications, television, high-tech materials…the research and resulting technologies that were required to develop the US space program touch virtually every aspect of our life. Today marks the 40th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11, resulting in two men walking on the moon four days later. And the entire decade devoted to the race to the moon might not have happened if Kennedy hadn’t said “we choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win“. Is It Barack Obama’s Fault You’re Broke?

I think it’s obvious if you take a quick look at the Politics section here on Dissociated Press that I’m no political science expert. But I do think I’m a little more aware than the average Bible-thumping Palin supporter, or all-bark-no-bite liberal intellectual. Which is why, although I feel comfortable in saying that politicians by and large are a bunch of money hungry, morally decrepit philanderers, I can still take a broader view and realize that although the media is already trying to link Obama administration policy to the economy, that this is patently absurd. So who’s to blame for the economic situation? Well, Time Magazine has 25 suggestions. But maybe it’s testosterone, or a glitch in our brains. Or maybe mathematics is to blame. Personally, I think it’s all at once both a little simpler, and a little more complex than all of this. I think it’s greed, and a long-term crisis of values. At least with Enron, there was a feeling that someone was going after the bad guys. And as a result, Enron no longer exists. In the case of the recent massive financial industry failures though, we’ve mostly sat back as citizens and coughed up the loot while the responsible parties move through the magic revolving door of business and government. This Vanity Fair piece about Joseph Cassano is one of the few in-depth looks at the real people behind this catastrophe that I’ve seen, and Cassano is just one of dozens of his type. I don’t know about you, but I’m broke, a little angry, and a little confused. Part of me wants to make an updated Leave Barack Alone video, and part of me wants to join Jon Stewart in saying “That’s great. Now fix the economy!” What do you think?

I’ve suspected for some time that all the world’s elected leaders are immediately replaced with robots upon taking office as part of a vast alien overlord conspiracy. Well, now I have evidence. If Disney’s Magic Kingdom can create creepy robot presidents from the Uncanny Valley like this (see Robama at 1:05) and this (see Robama at 1:20) for entertainment purposes, imagine what the dark ops people that created stealth bombers have up their sleeves. You’ll find this absurd (because that’s how an effective conspiracy works) but there is a war raging around the world, and the media is so tightly controlled that you won’t find out until it’s too late. That new Terminator movie? It’s just part of a massive PSYOP to prepare your mind for the inescapable fact that we will soon serve our robot masters. This report from a soldier in the field explains how Barack Obama’s robot army has taken over the world with their “million megawatt smiles and crushing fistbumps“. C’mon. A charming, impeccably articulate and intelligent president who exhibits almost zen-like serenity under pressure, is ridiculously handsome and is black? This had to be a dream come true. Or a robot invasion nightmare. You decide.
Just What IS The US Government Up To These Days?

I’ve been feeling a little in the dark lately about just what the current administration is really up to. Back in the Bush days you could easily get a sense of things by just looking for where the bombs were dropping, or where the poor people were drowning and starving in a major US city. I’m afraid we’re dealing with a more subtle beast now; though he campaigned on open government, President Obama seems to be resorting to clever loopholes to keep the blinds drawn. And while I’m pretty excited that the house has voted in favor of the new Clean Energy & Security Act, I wonder how many of the representatives have actually read it? In the case of the recent $787 billion dollar stimulus package passed not too long ago, legislators literally had one minute to read for every billion dollars they were making a decision about. Does it make sense to you that a legislator should vote on a bill that he might not fully understand even if he did read it? If not, take a look at readthebill.org, a group that’s pushing for legislation that requires a bill to be posted on line for 72 hours prior to voting. Given the tendency of congressional reps to not read bills prior to voting, maybe it’ll squeak by. Me, I’ll be over at Ben’s Guide To Government For Kids, trying to get a handle on this whole government thingy.
Demockracy At Home And Abroad

Saturday, June 20th, 2009Recent events in Iran should remind us to Vote Early, Vote Often.

I find it amusing that the American press seems so up in arms over the possibility that an election was (gasp!) stolen in Iran. I mean, even before we took all that democracy over to Iraq back in 2002, we were running pretty low on the stuff ourselves. The irony of anyone in the US calling shenanigans on an election in Iran is, of course, completely absurd. The current holocaust-denying megalomaniac that just got “re-elected” may have stolen the election, but his people probably learned from the best. Remember, it was the US that facilitated a coup d’état with the help of actual Nazis back in 1953, prior to installing the dictatorial but pro-western Shah of Iran. If you really want to steal an election, just go into politics. It’s just kind of how things work around here. There are plenty of guide books available, and this Washington Post piece explains why playing the slots in Vegas is more carefully monitored than voting machines are. Go ahead! Vote!
