What Are You Thankful For?

Aside from prepositional endings?

I have a lot to be thankful for. Like the fact that there’s no editor here at DP, and I can use all the prepositional endings I want to. Or the fact that I don’t have to eat Thanksgiving dinner on the Space Station . Or a Bacon Turducken. Or anything from the Natural Harvest Semen Cookbook. I can be thankful that we finally have a new face in the White House, or that my city isn’t being bombed today. I can be thankful that even when I’m broke (which I am recently) I still have great friends who will help me out, and no imminent fear of starvation or freezing to death on the streets. Which is why I’ll be doing some volunteer work this morning, to try and give back some of what I get. What are you thankful for?

Holiday Movie Ideas?

To me, the quintessential holiday films are Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and A Charlie Brown Christmas (although a friend just rabidly recommended The Hebrew Hammer, so I’ll be checking that out.) Rudolph is a fave partly because of its at times almost macabre vibe, but mostly because I’m essentially a misfit toy myself. Charlie Brown is on my list partly because I’m such a depressive git sometimes around the holidays but mostly because of the weird Vince Guaraldi music, like the catatonia-inspiring tune the kids sing when they’re skating (Christmas Time is Here, mp3). I’m sick of seeing lists of “10 Whatever” holiday films; any suggestions?

Have A Jolly Diwali

Lord knows we could use some light and change for the good…

The fact that today is the first day of Diwali is a reminder that I need to buy some candles. Not that I’m Hindu, Jain, or Buddhist, but I’ll use any excuse to shed a little light on things at this time of year, as (especially at the latitude where I live) we accelerate into shorter and shorter days and the gloom of winter sets in. If you live in the U.K., where there is a higher concentration of Indian ex-pats than in most of the U.S., you’re probably already familiar with Diwali, which is derived from the Sanskrit word dipavali, meaning row of lights. Much like western religious holidays, aspects of Diwali have been secularized, and the holiday – in addition to its original specific religious meanings – has taken on a broader general feeling of being a time of fresh starts in business and in life, a time to let the good in and the bad out. By the way, I intentionally chose that swastika image to grab attention, and in the hope of further turning bad perceptions into good ones. Learn a little about the Hindu meaning of the symbol here. And for the environmentally conscious, here are some guidelines for a green Diwali.

Halloween With Ben & Hank. And Bert. And Ernie. And A Sheep

More horrifying than a $700 Billion Bailout

For many, one of the most horrifying things this Halloween will be simply knowing that Hank Paulson and Ben Bernanke are the guys in charge of managing what may be the greatest financial crisis in America’s history. Embrace the horror with these creepy (and expensive) Ben and Hank masks. Okay, so maybe your 401K’s taken a beating and you don’t feel like dropping eighty bucks for a one-time gag. Using little more than ping pong balls, transform yourself into a surreal Homer Simpson, or a somewhat satanic version of Sesame Street’s Bert & Ernie. Still on a reasonable budget, especially if you’re on the OB/GYN team at the local hospital, is this inventive birth in progress costume. You’ll probably want to have a high comfort-level with your costume partner though. Speaking of comfort levels, I wouldn’t recommend spending too much time sitting down if you’re wearing this whoopee cushion getup. And lastly, I can’t help thinking that you’d have to be quite a sheep lover (in more ways than one) to come up with this one.
