Bush & Rove Laughing Hysterically
At Gullibility of American Public |
Back in 2001, right after the attacks on the World Trade Center (someone’s going to kill me for that link), a friend of mine and I joked about how Bush would somehow try to link the attacks to Saddam Hussein so he could invade Iraq. At the time, the idea sounded preposterous, and we had a big laugh. That’s why, after joking last year with a friend that “the only way a Republican will be in office in 2009 is if we go to war with Iran”, I’ll go out on a limb and predict an invasion by October. Some headlines this weekend: US prepares military blitz against Iran’s N-sites, Dutch pull spies on Iran attack fears, Israel ready to attack if Iran goes nuclear, US and UK begin war games in Persian Gulf , and the only one in the U.S. media: Iran warns any attack would start ‘world war’. Gentleman, rattle your sabres…

Mommy, What’s a Mashup?

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008What do you get when you cross the Black Album with the White Album?
I was surprised recently to find out how few of the young hipsters in my social circle seem to know about Mashups. For the uninitiated, read the overblown, self-important Wikipedia definition here. The concept is simple. Take two or more familiar pop media elements (from virtually any media), and mash them together to pleasing or amusing effect (I’ve never adequately defined for myself how they differ from “remixes”; they just do). The YouTube clip at left is a great example: George Bush covers U2′s Sunday Bloody Sunday, from RX’s “Party Party” mashup. Since mashups involve using large recognizable pieces of intellectual property, they’re often subject to takedown notices by the RIAA or MPAA as soon as they become popular. For that reason it’s often easiest to BitTorrent them. This is by no means a comprehensive list, but some faves of mine include Party Ben and Team9′s Dean Gray -American Edit (Green Day – American Idiot); Danger Mouse’s Grey Album (Jay-Z’s “The Black Album” mashed with The Beatles’ “White Album”) The Ciccones – The Immaculate Concoction (Madonna mixed with just about Read the rest of this entry »
Everybody Has A Stupid Brother

Thursday, June 26th, 2008Who would have guessed that the Dalai Lama has a plain-talking brother?
Jimmy Carter had a stupid brother. Bill Clinton had a stupid brother. George Bush probably IS the stupid brother (in that photo at left, the Dalai Lama is showing him where normal people’s moral standards are). But who’d have guessed that the Dalai Lama has one? Okay. I don’t know if he’s stupid, but things that he says are definitely a little “un-Dalai-Lama-like”.
Example:
Interviewer: At a young age, you, too, were recognized as a reincarnate of an important man, right? Tendzin Choegyal: Oh, that’s bullshit. I don’t believe it.
The interview is worth reading just to hear his take on Steven Seagal. By the way, don’t tell my brothers you read this; I’ll have some explaining to do…
