Or: call your album 49:00 because you were 20 in the 80′s

Not Paul Westerberg

This is not Paul Westerberg.
I just thought the hair captured
the essence of the post

The crazy $0.49 download of 49:00, the new release by Paul Westerberg got me thinking about his former band, the Replacements. Although I always admired them, I really never listened to much of the music they produced, and my Replacement fanboy friends all think I’m a poptard for saying I love the song “Kiss Me on the Bus”. To hell with my SnobPunk friends, I stand by my (occasionally valued) opinion that it’s one of the best songs to come out of the 80′s. To this day, I still don’t know what the lyrics really are, it’s just so crafted and so darn catchy that I don’t really care. Check out this embarrasingly 80′s YouTube clip of the song from Back Porch Videos, the dorky but way-ahead-of-its-time cable access program that was crewed and hosted by frighteningly New Wave high-school kids from Detroit. Learn more about Paul Westerberg’s 49:00 here, or buy it here.

Oliver Stone’s “W” Trailer “Leaked”?

Well, it seems to be a pretty big leak…

RawStory.com suggests the trailer for Oliver Stone’s upcoming biopic about George Bush was “leaked” Sunday. Looks to me like a standard teaser, but here it is, in any case: “A heartwarming romantic comedy about an adorable alcoholic with a dream — and the courage to pursue it.”

Braking News: Bob Novak Brakes For No-One

How the rich and famous deal with a hit and run accident: Just let it slide off, so to speak.

Things have been tough for Bob Novak. First there was that Valerie Plame thing. Then he made a fool of himself by angrily storming off set on CNN’s Inside Politics. Last week he got played by the McCain camp. And now he’s been caught playing Grand Theft Auto on the streets of DC. See his indifferent response on YouTube here. I’m still trying to figure out how someone can slide across Novak’s windshield without him noticing. His Corvette must be coated with the same magic Teflon that lets all these other things slide off, keeping him fully employed.

Meet Your Maker: Mr. Deity

In these hilarious, slickly produced YouTube clips, you’ll learn that even the Creator of the Universe has bad days.

Mr DeityIf you missed Mr. Deity back in 2006, it’s time for you to meet your maker. These simple yet slickly-produced shorts are one of the reasons I love the evolving world of streaming video. In episode one of Mr. Deity, the creator of the universe and his assistant are wrapping up creation and deciding how much evil to keep in the design, so as to maintain free will as part of the plan. Assistant: “Holocaust, Torture, and Downe’s Syndrome…those three alone…make it kind of hard to believe in you…throw in a hard winter or two, NO-one’s gonna believe in you…” Check out the rest of the episodes here, and read the interview with Mr. Deity on Crackle.com

Getting Joost

Joost – a new way to watch TV and streaming video, from the creators of Skype and Kazaa.

As a media-addicted person who can’t stand conventional television (I shut off my cable service in 2004), I’m always looking for new ways to feed my film & video jones. For television programs that people recommend, I usually BitTorrent . For news video, I can usually find a decent stream somewhere on the web. For film, I rent a lot of DVD’s, and catch the couple of big-screen-worthy films released each year in an actual theater, usually at matinee prices. Yes, I’m a cheap bastard. That’s why I was intrigued last year when I heard that the guys who created Skype and the much-litigated Kazaa (Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis) were working on a project called Joost , a system for distributing TV shows and other forms of video over the Web using peer-to-peer technology. Although I signed up as an early Beta user, the available content at launch time didn’t thrill me, so I waited until today to try it. If you want some television-like content on your computer, you HAVE to try this. After a reasonable download (11MB) and a very simple account setup, I was browsing an amazing variety of worthwile content. Media partners include A&E, PBS, National Geographic, CBS, BET, and many, many more. According to their site, 28,000+ shows and 480+ channels. You can download Joost here.
