And Bush says: “Okey-Dokey!”

Bush signing documentsWell George, it’s time to buy a new set of pens. You’ll be going through a lot of ink as you sign the blanket pardons for your felonious staff of the past several years. Although Slate has an excellent round up of the offenders available, so far the attempts at citizen’s arrests aren’t going so well. Although Bill Clinton (probably with merit) catches a lot of the flack for his pardons as he left office, both Reagan and Bush senior used up a fair amount of ink on their pardon power as well. They had that little Iran-Contra thing to clean up, after all. According to most sources you’ll review, Jimmy Carter was probably the last president (except for Ford’s pardon of Nixon) to use the power of pardon in a generally ethical way.

George Bush on the Economy: “Wall Street Got Drunk”

Off the record, the president shares his latest economic theories.

Bush DrunkWell, if that isn’t the proverbial pot calling the kettle black. If you watch this exclusive clip (he thought all cameras were off) you’ll get to hear Bush joking not only about Wall Street getting drunk, but also joking about how rough it’s been for him being on government pay for 14 years. Gee George, if only all the rest of us had to suffer a $400,000.00 yearly salary, free luxury housing, private air and ground transport, and full time security teams, as well as access to virtually anything else we want in the world, we could join you for a chuckle. To see some excellent clips of George himself being drunk, check out this YouTube compilation. Or this one to see where it all began. My suggestion for the new 2008 GOP slogan: “Ish thuh ick-onomy, shtoopid….”

The GOP threatens Cafe Press with lawsuits for letting its users promote the GOP.

GOP: Good Old-fashioned Piracy

Hey Republicans! You’re doing it wrong! In the latest example of “just-not-getting-it”, the GOP is apparently threatening to sue CafePress for allowing its users to repurpose the various trademarked GOP images such as the red-white-and-blue elephant and the letters “GOP”. The irony, of course, being the preponderance of images that are IN FAVOR of the GOP. Why would you want to sue your free marketing team? They obviously don’t have any money, I mean, who buys anything from CafePress? Next thing you know, they’ll be suing kids for drawing pictures of Dumbo and reading Horton Hears a Who. Get a grip, GOP, your existing internal marketing people don’t seem to be doing you any favors, and getting lawyers involved isn’t likely to help.

Feeling a little “voter remorse” because of Barack Obama’s recent FISA stance? Create your own Obama “Change” poster.

Remember back in the ’04 elections, when those pesky liberals turned the create-your-own-poster gizmo on the Bush-Cheney web site against itself? Well, in the interest of equal time, have at it, all you No-We-Can’ters. Just type your own phrase in the little box below Obama’s picture, and voila, your own campaign poster. This site doesn’t appear to belong to the official Obama campaign, so maybe it’ll be around for a while. Have yourself some fun, whoever your candidate may be.

FISA: A Big Barack Obummer

How much deceipt will Democratic voters accept in the name of winning?

The passage of the FISA bill in congress last week reminded me of how glad I am that I’m usually able to maintain my ignorant dreams of utopia. This ability comes in handy at times like these, when a politician I thought I really admired so whole-heartedly caves in and signs off on what I consider to be one of the most un-American pieces of legislation to slither through the gutter that is the U.S. Congress. Hey, B.O.! You really let us down on this one! It was only October last year that Obama’s spokesperson Bill Burton said “To be clear: Barack will support a filibuster of any bill that includes retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies” . October Surprise, indeed. If you want to learn more about the FISA bill, Glenn Greenwald had an informative piece on Salon, and here’s the Wikipedia entry. If you want to take action, you can support the ACLU, which has filed a lawsuit questioning the bill’s constitutionality, or support the EFF, with their Continue the Fight Against Warrantless Wiretapping campaign.
