We're generating more information every two days than we did in all of human history prior to 2003. Unfortunately almost all of it is YouTube clips, stupid top ten lists, infographics, and crap content created by underpaid hacks writing linkbait for content farms to generate AdSense revenue.

You may have read the other day that although it took all of human history up until 2003 to generate five exabytes of information, that much is now created every two days. I can tell you where all that data resides. It’s comprised mainly of YouTube clips of teenage boys igniting their farts, self-referential personal blog posts about why the blogger hasn’t blogged for a while, incomprehensible infographics, overwrought and not-very-funny flowcharts, and useless top ten lists of things that don’t warrant top ten lists. Below is our contribution to this steaming heap of useless data that guarantees that of the 2646 web pages you view this month (infographic here), approximately 2645 of them will be of no lasting value to the human race.

Top 5 Sites For Useless Top 10 (or 5, or 12, or 37, or 100) Lists

1.) Digg

2.) Delicious

3.) Mixx

4.) Clipmarks

6.) Yahoo Buzz

As a proof of concept, I did a quick review of a popular link aggretor site today, and by far the two best places to find useless lists were Digg and Delicious , with Mixx , Clipmarks and Yahoo Buzz running a little anemically in distant third, fourth, and fifth places, respectively. Delicious wins a special award for featuring “25+ Useful Free E-books Every Blogger Should Read” and “5 Ways That Paper Books Are Better Than eBooks” at the same time. And no, I’m not going to link to the damn articles, because the single biggest reason these lists get created in the first place is to generate traffic, which we’ll explain in more detail below.

Top 5 Useless Lists We Found On These Sites today:

1.) 25 Best Social News And Social Bookmarking Websites for Designers And Developers – This one links to all the social bookmarking sites, to insure that a link to itself will pop up on all of them.

2.) 25 Best iPad Application Websites With Design Inspiration – Because, you know, who DOESN’T draw their design inspiration from iPad application websites?

3.) 8 CRM Tactics to Win Back Former Clients – You could probably only create a graphic this useless with all the time you had on your hands after losing the clients in the first place.

4.) 40 Hilarious Fortune Cookies Fortunes – I eat a lot of chinese food. I have a digital camera. Hmmm. I better make a website, before someone else does!

5.) 12 of the Most Ridiculous Books Ever Printed – I actually gave this list last place because I disagree with much of their list. I mean, what bookshelf is complete without The Haunted Vagina and The Big Coloring Book of Vaginas?

Number One On The List Of One And Only Top Bullshit Content Generators

1.) Demand Media, the Content Farm

The number one offender when it comes to creating the most useless 999,999,999,999,999,999 of those 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes of data we mentioned earlier is by far Demand Media. Learn more about how all this crap content is created by underpaid hack writers who whore themselves out for web traffic in this PBS MediaShift series of articles in which the writers explain what it’s like toiling on the content farm.

Top Six Tools Of The Content Farmer

Infographics – Muddle Your Meaningless Linkbait Topic With Pictures!

Infographics are interesting, because the whole idea behind them is supposed to be that you’re saying something more efficiently or effectively with an image rather than words, but almost universally the message gets clouded by the very media that was supposed to clarify it. We’ve talked about infographics and flow charts before, and in fact have created our own regularly. But the infographic has become an uninspired, uninformative, and unavoidable fixture on the web, and one of the key tools of the content farm hack. Below are two insightful infographics to illustrate my point.

This image from InfoGraphicsShowcase.com sums up a bunch of things. First of all, it cleverly points out the flaws of many infographics. But perhaps more importantly, the site it’s on makes it very easy to save the image, so we can resize it, place it on our site, and make it look like it’s our content, which it isn’t! There are thousands of content farm sites that are a feeble step up from being scraper sites that do this every day.

No Wonder I Don’t Understand Health Care – Even the US government is in on the grift. The image below is extracted from an actual US government document. It ironically is an excellent infographic, because its incomprehensibleness reflects health care in America with almost 100% accuracy.

Flow Charts – Not A Creative Bone In Your Body? Steal!

We tried our hand at this with our own original I dropped food on the floor should I eat it flowchart, only to be trumped two years later by this flowchart, which eventually made it all the way to a feature on Huffington Post. Ours languishes in the archives. *Sigh*. But worry not, aspiring content farmers! Because being in possession of no creativity whatsoever is no obstacle to creating a successful and well-trafficked site. Which is why so many websites and blogs that are utterly devoid of the ability to generate original content will do something like what we’ve done below.

This is the original Pan Flute Flow Chart, created by Toothpaste for Dinner. It has been used thousands of times without being credited, and a Google search will usually result in many sites including BoingBoing.net ranking higher for the search phrase “Pan Fute Flow Chart”

This is a great way to capitalize on this kind of graphic. Clean it up, don’t credit the creator, and then put YOUR web site’s URL on it. The combination of the cleaner graphic and offical-looking web address will ensure that THEIR content is now YOUR content.

The remaining tools of the linkbaiting hack are numerous, but topping the list would be any articles about:

Top SEO Tricks – Because maybe you’ll link to them as great SEO tips, and they’ll actually finally show up in Google as great SEO tips.

20 Blogging Tips – Because when you have nothing to write about, all that’s left is writing about how everyone else should write.

Best WordPress Themes – Because although everyone can call tech support at the hosting company to install it, they have NO IDEA how to customize it.

Keys To A Successful Startup - Because, you know – when you’re busy with a successful startup, you’ll want to take time to share how to do it.

Free Software – Because everybody wants to own Adobe InDesign, but no-one has a few grand laying around.

Our endless plot to chart your demise by making you view graphic depictions of life, work, and money.

Now that there’s an Internet Addiction Treatment Center, I wonder if there are plans for a treatment center for infographic addiction? As I pondered this, I wondered, of course, what a “no graphs infographic” would look like. My quick prototype is on the left. Which raises an interesting question: If infographics are such a powerful communication tool, why am I writing about them? We’ve touched on flow charts and a variety of amusing infographics before, but there seems to be an endless supply of them. I’m especially partial to the kind that puts incomprehensible things into tidy visual form, like what does a million dollars like? Which is why I especially like What If You Printed the Internet? Economic data is also always more palatable when viewed graphically, as in this Good Magazine piece. A bunch of little “MSN Buddies” out of work are much cuter than a photo of a bunch of haggard hungry people in line. Technophiles in particular are naturally drawn to data visualizations, which is why the food-group-like pyramid graphics Balance Your Media Diet and The Hierarchy of Digital Distractions have made the rounds lately. It’s interesting that “gaming” and “device failure” top the respective pyramids. If I don’t get treatment for my little graphic addiction problem, I’ll be back with more soon. But if you’re yearning for more now, check out some of the sites below for more interesting data visualizations. But first, can someone explain to me what Iowa’s problem is?

In spite of its simple interface, Visual Complexity is just that. Kind of complex.
Lots of interesting projects and software apps for visual data presentation.

The guy at WallStats got known for his Death and Taxes Poster
I’m personally more amused by things like his beer infographics:

Good Magazine is a personal favorite of mine partly because I’m sort of a magazine fetishist, but even more so because they produce some of the coolest infographics that end up going a little viral. Always thematically clever, and always on hip, important, and progressive topics:

The people over at MadAtoms do irreverant, sometimes even mildly offensive infographics in a style uniquely their own. The Recession-Proof Jobs Manual is on the milder side of their best work:

A Few More:

Cool Infographics is a blog maintained by Marketing and Product Development professional Randy Krum, Information Aesthetics is a similar site designed and maintained by Andrew Vande Moere, and Chartporn is a collection managed by Dustin Smith, an economist in Washington DC

If you want to die on your next flight, take an Aeroflot DC-9 from the United States to Russia in August, and make sure to get a seat in First Class. At least that’s what this interesting chart suggests. Sometimes an infographic can say so much more than words, which makes the fact that I’m writing about it a little ironic (see infographic below). As I’ve pointed out before, 78.6% of all statistics mentioned in casual conversation are inaccurate. But I still find infographics and flowcharts fascinating. How else could you really wrap your mind around what a million dollars looks like ? This set of graphics, for instance, speaks volumes about how projects really evolve, and in a way that almost every guilty party involved would probably find amusing. And in spite of all the hype about Twitter (including the info in the clip at left) this set of graphics quickly puts things in perspective. The GOP/Dem debates about war and health care that I recently mentioned in this piece can also be summed up more quickly with two photos and some simple copy. What I’d really find interesting though, is if someone made an interactive graphic of how people from a broad set of demographics use their time throught the day. Oh wait. Never mind. Have any interesting infographics of your own to share?

Axis if we care. Our plot to disrupt the day you've carefully charted for yourself involves graphic depictions of death, birth, crime, and...Wikipedia?

Do you ever feel overwhelmed with the information and sensory input at your disposal these days? We’re here to help. Overwhelm you more, that is. In our ongoing plot to derail your Monday morning, we’ve touched on fleshmaps, facebook maps, why Ian can’t get a date maps, infographics, flowcharts , and million dollar graphics. So you’d think we’d be done, right? But no. Here we have 50 more examples of ways to visualize data, brought to you by WebDesignerDepot.com. Of all of the examples presented, I probably found TuneGlue the most useful; it visually cross-references musical artists and their work in a very simple interface, with Amazon links. By the way, a lot of those tools in that link made pretty graphs, but were in most cases visualizing things normal people don’t care about. And there’s definitely a flaw in the plan when a graphic actually makes it harder to understand complex information rather than easier. So check out 5,000 years of Middle East history in 90 seconds, or BreathingEarth, where you can watch deaths and births in real time and ponder your emissions. Even better, WorldClock displays everything from oil consumption to US crime stats in real time. And lastly, have you ever wondered what Wikipedia would look like if it were in book form?

I don't know. Let's do a flowchart.

We’ve talked about flowcharts here before. Although I’m a pretty organized person, I don’t actually find them useful for getting organized, but I do find them quite amusing. That’s why, when I dropped some lettuce on the floor as I was making a salad today, I realized I had to jump on the flow chart bandwagon and do one of my own. You see, I like simple rules, but the Three Second Rule for whether or not to eat food that’s been on the floor is just too simple. So here’s my flow chart assessing the problem. Think you might find a flow chart useful for a problem of your own, but you aren’t quite sure? Try the Flowchart Of Should You Make A Flowchart. Still not sure you’re getting the hang of it? Here’s A Guide To Understanding Flowcharts In Flowchart Form. And if you’re for some reason questioning the truth of the information I’m sharing, here are The Steps To Determine The Factual Content Of A Statement. You should be careful with this sort of self-referential analysis though, lest you become trapped in a Hasselhoffian Recursion.

With the right tools, ANY project can be delayed almost indefinitely...

It’s the weekend, and you finally have some time to organize some of those projects you couldn’t get to during the week. Why not implement a flow chart to get things on track? At left is a chart I resort to when I want things I don’t really need. Just substitute any phrase for “Pan Flute” (like, “60 inch Plasma TV” or “orgasm”) and voila! Decision made. I already saved two hours and a few hundred dollars today thanks to that simple chart. If you’re having trouble getting your project rolling, check out the Procrastination Flow Chart. Graphs can also be useful. Peruse the user-submitted graphs at GraphJam.com for useful analyses like Waking Time Spent On Boobies or this concise assessment of the information age. Thinking about upgrading to Windows Vista? Here’s a chart to help you. As we’ve pointed out before, even technologically impaired organizations like the RIAA use flow charts. See the RIAA Lawsuit Decision Matrix. This Things To Say During Sex diagram is not really a flow chart or a graph, but has some good advice all the same. And lastly, when you go back to work on Monday, remember: succesful BlameStorming doesn’t just happen. Proper planning is essential.
