Do the surreal creations of Cyriak, SecretAgentBob, and Weebl constitute a genre? Who cares. Watch hours disappear as you watch clip after one minute clip.

Somewhere in the surreal realm between the audiovisual creations of Cyriak (who brought us cows & cows & cows, Baaa, and Welcome to Kitty City) and the musical animated storytelling of SecretAgentBob (who brought us Charlie the Unicorn and Ferrets) lies the repetitiously brilliant creations of mr weebl (we’ve included a few of these videos below). Is this a genre? I can’t decide. The musical portions of Cyriak and Weebl’s clips seem to reside somewhere in the microgenres of Bitpop or Chiptune, but to be honest, I decided to stop keeping track of microgenres ten minutes after I first heard the term back in the early nineties. So we’ll just let these offbeat creations be what they are. We’re focusing on Weebl today, because in spite of having the largest volume of work of the three on line by far, I personally didn’t know who he was until today, when I ran across Shrimp Glockenspiel. Why are internerds so shellfish with their clever links? Once I paid a little more attention, I quickly realized I was familiar with his NSFW Amazing Horse and Narwhals; I just didn’t realize he had such a huge body of work. You’re likely to either love Weebl (British flash animator Jonti Picking ) or hate him. His 200+ YouTube clips have received tens of millions of views, but his TV ad for Yell 118 247 Directory Heaven earned him the honor of sixth most irritating ad of 2009. Which I guess is actually a positive assessment when discussing TV commercials. Below are what I’d consider weebl’s “greatest hits”. If you actually like the music itself, he has hundreds of tunes on Amazon, and a ton of apps on iTunes as Weebl’s Stuff Ltd .
This week's links you may have missed include lots of vehicular vidiocy, a little "schneedenfreude" (a word we just introduced into German), and the Holy Batting Cage.

As the old saying goes: “writing about YouTube videos is like dancing about reality shows”, so for this week’s Missing Links, we’ll spare you the excessive highbrow commentary, so you can dig straight in to the YouTubidity of it all. From cradle to CataCombo, we have it all. Clips below.

~PRODUCTS WE MAY NOT NEED~

CataCombo Sound System by Pause

It’s a testament to the success of TheOnion.com and the death of meta-irony that – much like Meat Water – it’s hard to tell if this product is legit or a really elaborate attempt to create viral content. If it IS real, there may be some licensing issues. I can’t imagine the RIAA letting you perform copyrighted music for the rest of eternity without paying royalties, even if only to a dead person.

The Worlds Fastest Baby Stroller

It took a generation of annoyingly self-centered fitness freaks to come up with the Jeep Overland Limited Jogging Stroller with iBaby Sound System, and this merely bumps it up a notch. Personally I think this video is better if you turn down the sound and play Simon & Garfunkel’s Baby Driver while you watch it.

~VEHICULAR VIDIOCY~

Russian Highway Patrol

Just another day on the Russian freeways.

Department of Redneck Transportation Tire Testing

Somehow, this activity is a great metaphor for America too.

Why Drinking at Noon is a Bad Idea

Drinking and driving are a bad combination in more ways than you knew. Thank God this happened in Little Canada, Minnesota, where probably ALL bar owners have a Bobcat Front End Loader parked out back. Now we know why they do. For extra fun, say “Bobcat Front End Loader” in a Fargo accent.

~Sliders~

The People vs Winter

Did you know that in German, there’s a word for people who think it’s fun to watch other people suffering in the snow? The word is “schneedenfreude”. Actually, I just made that up based on the word Schadenfreuede and the German word for snow, “schnee”. But it works. Engage in some below.

Back when using that phrase wouldn’t have evoked such a creepy image.

Running a site like Dissociated Press, I end up seeing dozens of links submitted by visitors almost every day. Usually, I’ve seen them myself already on Reddit or some other social sharing site, but by the end of the day (like it or not) I end up feeling like I’ve seen the entire internet. A friend mocks me about this by saying, in a dramatic, breathy voice: “The internet. I have seen it“. In any case, I end up with these unimagineably huge collections of bookmarks and animated GIF’s that serve almost no purpose whatsoever. I tried once before to find a way to unload them on you with collections of infographs and videos or pointless lists of lists, but quickly discovered it was almost as much work as creating actual original content. But we’re going to give this idea a reboot every Tuesday for a while anyway, so enjoy. Linky goodness complete with YouTubidity below.

POP QUIZ

CHOOSY MOTHERS DON’T CHOOSE GIFS

The respective gender’s perception of the other gender’s idea of foreplay, presented as a Sponge Bob animation.

Our final collection of pointless infographics, lists of stupid lists, and the videos that eat up any time you have left over after Facebook.

I’m always searching for ways to bring you interesting content without actually doing any work. For a long time, I achieved this with our Monday Demotivators, but with the incredible growth in the unemployment sector, no one’s at work on Monday these days to avoid it, so we dropped that weekly feature back in December 2009. More recently, I thought I’d sneak by with a weekly “linkdump” (like this one and this one), but quickly realized that this would be almost as much work as actually writing something, so I hope you enjoy this final collection of useless infographics, pointless lists, and YouTubidity. The infographics and videos are first, because the stupid list of 66 stupid lists would take you almost as long to peruse as the hours of suffering all the involved parties endured in the hope that someone would actually take the time to look it over. Oh. But before we move on, my pick for link of the week is the story of how Coach scrubbed their brand clean of all the filthy Snooki.

Weekly WTF

I’ll be eternally grateful if you can explain these two images to me:

Videos You Need…

Brilliantly Cute Video Of The Week
(Thank you Giri & Jordan)

Meanest Video Of The Week
Laughing at this requires a well-developed sense of schadenfreude.

Near-Miss Internet Meme

With over 2 billion photos uploaded to Facebook each month and 24 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every MINUTE, when will we have time to enjoy it all? And where will we keep it until then?

As I bemoaned the fact the other day that I had nothing I wanted to listen to in my music collection, I had to pause and laugh. I have what some of my friends consider to be a rather puny collection at about 14,000 song files. Really? Nothing to listen to? If I DID choose to listen to it all, I just did the math, and it would play non-stop for just over 48 days! And my collection is only about 0.001% of the 13,000,000 songs on iTunes. This reminded me of a discussion I had years ago when I worked in a bookstore and I asked one of the more seasoned bibliophiles on staff when he thought was the last time a person might have read all the books in print, and without hesitating he replied “around the time of Voltaire”. I guess book store employees have time to ponder these things. Today, if you were to read a book a day, it would take you 355,794 years to accomplish the same feat, at least based on Google Books’ count, which is 129,864,880 books. Things get worse when it comes to user-generated content. If you wanted to watch all the videos uploaded to YouTube from JUST TODAY, it would take you about 94 years. Of course, somewhere in there you’d be watching a few thousand versions of Keyboard Cat, but that’s how much video was uploaded today; 24 hours’ worth every minute. And things are for all practical purposes just as hopeless if you have any intention of trying to keep up with feature films; this source says that globally, there were 6,324 made by major studios in 2009, and if you include indy films submitted to major festivals, the number jumps to 50,000 each year. Even if you stuck to only watching the major releases, that’s still 17 movies a day. So where do we store all this media? And when will we have time to consume it? Well, the answer to the first question may soon become a problem; 2008 was the first year in which the data we generated exceeded our available storage space. Thank God we delete old e-mails, right? And the answer to the second is up to you. Personally, this all made me realize that with an estimated 37 years to live (according to this MSN calculator, who knows how much storage space it uses) I probably need to select my media more carefully, and maybe read a book before years’ end. That hour on YouTube, 3 hours on Wikipedia, and 2 hours sharing it all on Facebook last night was probably time better spent.

While there are 24 hours worth of video uploaded to YouTube every minute, there are other things happening in that minute too. The image below is from Tosh.0, a Comedy Central show that I’ve never seen because I don’t have hard drive space to store torrents of it. The original graphic can be found here. That means there are for sure at least three copies of it somewhere.

The research staff at Dissociated Press did some further studies, and made the alarming discovery that with the current rate of growth and distribution of unnecessary and confusing infographics, they will comprise 87.3% of the data created worldwide by the end of 2010, causing the entire Internet to grind to a halt by June, 2011. Here are some infographics to help you understand why:

Although this Evolution of Storage infographic goes into mind-numbing detail, it fails to explain where it plans to store itself:

Likewise with this infographic about cloud storage that makes its point with iPads and elephants. Neither one has USB ports, so how will we transfer all our infographics to them?

Ever get a weird possessive feeling about the links you share? Me too. That's because they're ALL MINE. I just haven't been sharing them. Help me name our new weekly "link dump" column.

I get depressed sometimes when I realize that my life is just a bunch of web links strung together with occasional real-life discussion, but mostly just connected by written commentary and link sharing on Facebook. It gets REALLY depressing when I find myself having an emotional response to someone sharing a link on their Facebook “wall” without crediting me, as if somehow it was MY link. Or if they get more comments in spite of posting it when it’s already a week old. “Stupid link sharing friend! I shared that link LAST WEEK!” This is one of the unfortunate side effects of maintaining a site like Dissociated Press. As I said to a friend once: “The Internet. I have seen it“. Out of the literally dozens of sources I comb regularly to bring you interesting stuff, I OMIT infinitely more than I share, because, well, they’re JUST LINKS. So I’ve finally decided to put this wasted pile of weekly links to use, with a regular “link dump” section. I just need a name for this new section on the site. “Linkdump” somehow doesn’t sound like something that would generate enthusiastic user engagement. So if you have an idea for a name, feel free to share. But enough delaying. On with delinking!

First of all, the two links that I’m most surprised haven’t been shared more:

InstantOilSpill.com and WhatTheF***IsMySocialMediaStrategy.com

Last week’s internet superstar was clearly Basil Marceaux, the Tennessee gubernatorial candidate who put the “goober” back in gubernatorial. We immediately did a roundup of Basil and other unusual candidates across the country, but guess what? Basil’s back, and he’s badder than ever. And he’s really got his message together this time. Check out his thoughts on gun control. He’s firm in his belief that we can’t NOT let nutcases have guns. Cuz the government has Patriot Missiles, and we have slingshots. And rocks. And stuff.

If you find Basil’s slant on politics interesting, you should really visit the site of one of his mentors, PLENIPOTENTIARY-JUDGE: David-Wynn:Miller. If you have trouble understanding what he says, he provides some guidance on Sentence Structure.

Personally, I find this box more interesting:

Another fun thing to link to are Flash-based doodads that require mind-numbing math and programming skills to be pretty and make noise but otherwise have no intrinsic value for the human race. Like the Andre Michelle Laboratory, which has a lot of cool things like pulsate and tone matrix. And one of the most bizarrely authentic synthesized acoustic guitar sounds you’ll ever hear. I say “bizarrely authentic” because it sounds sort of like acoustic guitar for the uncanny valley.

Sorry. Are you yawning? Perhaps it’s not my fault.

Perhaps you need to see some ants on a scanner. Five years of ants on a scanner, to be exact:

That is probably the greatest thing since the long-defunct Cat-Scan.com. Remember? When that guy ran that site where people put their cats on scanners? We’ve come a long way since then. Now we have…

Perhaps someone has pointed you toward that amazing web site devoted to MRI scans of food. I just want to point out this was done back in 2007, with a Big Mac. And the Big Mac MRI has a soundtrack. And is on YouTube. Can someone please tell that “Inside insides” guy about streaming video? There’s something a little Geocities about 20 megabytes of GIF’s on the same page. Anyway, here’s your Big Mac:

While both the EFF and Alvin Greene have scored their own little victories recently, we're still waiting for the Alvin Greene Day & The Chipmunks mashup.

I love it when the day’s news converges in such a way that politics, pop media, copyright law, and comedy collide in an amorphous mass of inanely entertaining foolishness. Like today. While the EFF scored major victories allowing you to jailbreak your iPhone and remix YouTube video content, the PR firm “Frank Strategies” forced a YouTube takedown of the Alvin Greene campaign rap video because it used a few seconds of crappy Tea Party protest footage from one of their videos. Except it wasn’t actually Alvin Greene’s campaign video , and and you can still find it on YouTube, ironically on the Fixed News Channel, which parodies Fox News. If you haven’t followed this story, Alvin Greene is an unemployed felon who lives with his mom, who in spite of these minor handicaps was also the recent victor in the South Carolina Democratic U.S. Senate primary race. Many believe he was a GOP plant. Just another campaign season in America, I guess. Given the media mashup nature of this story, the biggest surprise here is that there still is no “Alvin Greene and the Chipmunks”* parody. Until then, the only Al Green video that gets my vote is featured below….

*There are plenty of Alvin & The Chipmunks Green Day clips to work with.

If you saw the video at left on its own, you might just think “Aw, what a silly sappy little fangirl with a sweet voice”, or, if you’re a weepy little crybaby like me, you might actually tear up a bit. She does have a lovely little voice, and she seems like she’s on the verge of crying as she does her introduction and then sings an a capella piece. But what makes the whole thing more touching is that her simple, unsolicited video clip inspired American choral composer Eric Whitacre to assemble his Virtual Choir (clips below), which is a project that uses 285 singers from 12 countries to perform his work. So what’s so inspiring about that? Well, it’s all done through YouTube! On his how we did it page, he describes how a friend sent him the Britlin Losee clip, which inspired the rest. Although the inclusion of Whitacre “virtually conducting” a couple hundred YouTube clips floating in darkness detracts a bit from the video production (it lends a slightly “John Tesch” vibe), the resulting music is gorgeous, and embodies the sort of thing that’s rarely achieved but always hoped for via the web: international sharing of creativity, passion, harmony, and beauty. It also proves something that I’ve always believed but am willing to ascribe to my perceptual disorders, which is that everyone has a song in them. I am almost always hearing a choir in my head, and this music sounds like part of it. Now I know what some of the people look like! More clips below.

It would just be silly for us to review a preview of a review of a movie, so we'll let you decide for yourself what to think about YouTube celebrity critic Red Letter Media.

What’s one half brilliant comedy, one half insightful critical analysis, and one half annoying? The movie reviews by Red Letter Media, that’s what. Yeah, I know that’s three halves, but the math just feels right. I’ve never been a big fan of critics and movie reviews; there’s something intrinsically annoying about someone who doesn’t know how to do something sitting around telling you how someone who does didn’t do it right. We’ve mentioned the “meta” nature of recent pop media before, and this is where the Red Letter Media reviews of films like Star Wars: The Phantom Menace shine. If you haven’t seen them before, the reviews are a strange mix of childish complaints mixed with brilliant insights, delivered with a simple-minded but self-aware lowbrow humor. All read in a contrived voice that sounds like a cross between Strong Bad and Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs . The reviews are sometimes almost as long as the movies they’re skewering, and sometimes worth the marathon, sometimes not. It would just be too meta even for my tastes to review a review of a movie, so I’ll let you decide for yourself. So who’s behind this madness? Surprisingly, it’s not some tormented nerd with a video camera like CopperCab, it’s an indy film actor/director/writer named Mike Stoklasa, who apparently collaborates with fellow indy filmmaker Jay Bauman. Read an interview Stoklasa here, and explore the reviews on Red Letter Media’s YouTube channel.

It would just be too meta even for my tastes to review a preview of a review of a movie, so I’ll let you decide for yourself:

Not content with suing dead people, old ladies who don't own computers, and their own artists and distibution channels, the record industry is going after those archvillains of the arctic, CANADA.

In their never-ending quest for most absurd litigation to make its way into the apparently oblivious judicial system, the record industry is stepping it up a notch. No, it wasn’t enough to steal from their own artists and corrupt the legal system, or to sue a single woman for $80,000 per allegedly pirated song (oh wait, it got reduced to a mere $2,250!), or sue dead people, people who don’t even own computers, and the entire radio industry. No, now they’re taking on the country that – as we all know – is home to the most ruthless criminal networks of the Americas. You know, Canada. Who knew that aside from being a country full of pretty nice people whose greatest crime may be occasionaly finishing sentences with “eh?”, Canada is also a hotbed of profit-robbing music piracy? As far as I knew, the only threat that Canada had brought to the established music industry recently was a really awesome indy scene, but the RIAA sees things a little differently. Fortunately, this may be one of the last times that you’ll have to endure wingnuts like me ranting about this; dinosaur labels like EMI are soon likely to be laying about in massive heaps gasping for their last breaths like their metaphoric counterparts at the end of the Jurassic period, as they continue to blame their $2.7 billion losses on piracy rather than their failure to adapt to competition. I tend to get a little over-the-top when I discuss this topic; for a much more sane overview from an artist’s point of view, check out this New York Times piece by Damian Kulash Jr. of the band OK Go, in which he calmly describes how EMI’s disabling of the “embed” feature on YouTube has probably lost them exponentially more than what they made by “protecting” their property.
