Wait. So Africa IS A Country?

Thursday, November 13th, 2008Or Sarah Palin’s not retarded after all?
Don’t believe everything you read. Maybe not even the following information. “On the Internet”, as they say, “no-one knows you’re a dog“. Apparently all the hoopla about Sarah Palin thinking Africa was a country was the result of the media falling for an absurd parody of a think tank (The Harding Institute for Freedom and Democracy), a political expert (Martin Eisenstadt), and his blog. See this New York Times piece for the convoluted details.
I’m Giving Myself A Palinoscopy

Saturday, October 4th, 2008If I need a Palinectomy, will I have to go to a Palintologist?
So I can locate the tumor and get it out of my head, once and for all. Unless she does something remarkable before election day, like pose for Playboy for instance – this will be the last I have to say about Sarah Palin. So here’s the roundup: By now you’ve probably seen the Sarah Palin Debate Flow Chart. Pretty amusing, but if you’ve followed the strategies closely enough, a lot of the Palin dopiness and “youbetcha” talk is a campaign style perfected by Bush. I’m personally convinced she says “nucular” on purpose. So apparently downplaying her intelligence leading up to the debates worked, but all the same it’s a shame somehow that one of the most common comments in the press regarding the debaters was “no major gaffes”. On that point, Tucker Carlson of MSNBC summed it up about Palin when he said: “She couldn’t have done worse than expected; That would violate the laws of physics.” Strange hearing that coming from Mr. Bowtie. And lastly, David Letterman nails it with his Top 10 Things Heard at Palin Debate Camp (YouTube). Click “more” for the list if you don’t want to watch the clip. Read the rest of this entry »

Tina Fey For Vice President

Sunday, September 14th, 2008..and Matt Damon for Minister of Truth
I’ve been waiting weeks for this, and I don’t even have TV. In the SNL clip at left, Tina Fey becomes more “hockey mom as VP” than the person she’s parodying. Which I have to say (no discredit meant to Tina) isn’t hard, because McCain’s VP pick comes across to me like the chardonnay-fueled homebuilder’s wife that tries to cut you off at the supermarket because she’s in such a hurry to get her box-o-wine. Also pretty funny from the last few days is this clip with Matt Damon calmly expressing with a little wry humor the absurdity of the GOP’s pick for VP. As Matt points out, “…you do the actuary tables, and there’s a one outa three chance, if not more, that McCain doesn’t survive his first term…”, and compares the “hockey mom as VP” idea to “…a really bad Disney movie…”.

Monday, September 1st, 2008Does John McCain Need A Bitch-Slap?
Well, not all of them. Somehow, I don’t think the typical female voter in this country is falling too hard for this Sarah Palin thing. In fact, it’s such an utterly transparent move that I’m convinced that it was a short-term media ploy to recapture the press cycle after Obama’s speech, and that there’s going to be a scandal or two, she’ll be discredited, and the McCain campaign will make their final choice later, when it all benefits the campaign. Or maybe McCain is really just not so bright, and forgets there are other ways to destroy your opponent’s campaign. But then, I sometimes have trouble getting my mind around conservative American values. I mean, do Republican women really prefer PINK Women For McCain Mugs, and buttons with frilly patterns on them? Or is that just more luddite McCain campaign thinking? Ironically, their African Americans For McCain (don’t laugh, I know a few personally) buttons are white, and their Arab Americans For McCain buttons are black.
