Remember back in Ye Olden Days of the Before Time, the days of the Dot-com Bubble, when you and all your friends had jobs that paid $80k+ a year, and “work” on Monday consisted primarily of calling your friends on the phone while browsing Match.com and reclaiming your childhood by buying mint-in-box copies of your favorite toys on eBay? Yeah, me neither. While all those hosers were busy frittering away the capital from the biggest economic boom in history, I was working my butt off starting a business. And as a result, I rarely work on Mondays, because I’ve usually worked ALL WEEKEND. Which is why, as recently as 2009, I still took delight in derailing the MF95 crowd’s week with our Monday Demotivators. Well, the other day, it occurred to me that this was not enough, so I figured it was time to revive The Office Prank. We’re omitting the more obvious “cubicle remodeling” jokes; once you’ve seen one cube covered in Post-Its, foil, or wrapping paper, you’ve seen them all. Instead, we’re focusing more on gaslighting methods. We’ve outlined them below. Just don’t get carried away like the dentist who thought that replacing his employee’s teeth with boar tusks would be good for a hoot. Things might get ugly .

Basic Gaslighting

Every night after the victim leaves work, remove every staple from their stapler except for 3 or 4. This requires long-term persistence to see and enjoy the results

Put scotch tape over the plug-end on the target’s desk phone receiver, and plug it back in. This works as is, but for more rewarding results, call their line, and act like a management or HR figure. When they respond and you “can’t hear them”, start suggesting that their silent treatment is getting them in deeper trouble by the second.

Put a “Voice Activated’ sign on a new machine (fax, printer, copier, etc.) in the office. Here are some official looking documents.

Computer Based Tricks

Take a print-screen of their desktop, save it as the background, then hide all the icons on the desktop.

Reverse the buttons on the victim’s mouse in Control Panel.

Dvorak their keyboard.

Add a USB wireless keyboard and mouse receiver to their station, and randomly operate the extra keyboard and mouse while they work.

Assign pornographic sounds to simple things on their computer.

Install the dreaded Blue Screen of Death Screensaver.

Change the AutoCorrect settings in Word -

The image below is from Word 2000. It may look different on your version, but the method will be very similar. Go to Tools>AutoCorrect and make sure “Replace text as you type” is selected, then add replacements of your choice in the “Replace” and “With” boxes. Here are a set of words that will take them forever to notice: accept/except; advice/advise; are/our; buy/by; complement/compliment; emigrate/immigrate; it’s/its; loose/lose; miner/minor; past/passed; principal/principle; stationary/stationery; than/then; their/there/they’re; threw/through; weather/whether; your/you’re

Let's take a moment to think about the 45 million turkeys that gave their life in the war against our hunger today. And after doing so, commence to shootin' 'em again.

We shared some more somber Thanksgiving thoughts here today, but if you were looking for somber, you’d be reading the emo blog whimperings over at xanga.com, right? We know you really just want something to kill the time while you do your best to appear mentally and emotionally present at your family dysfunctions for today, so we’ve rounded up some flash games you can play while you pretend you’re just checking text messages or whatever. We’ve observed before that there’s an odd tendency for Flash games to focus on doing cruel things to helpless animals, and Thanksgiving is no exception. First up, and probably least cruel, we have Turkey Fling, in which – you guessed it – you fling a turkey. Probably not as gratifying as Santa Toss, but there’ll be plenty of time for that in December. A little higher on the cruel curve we have Turkey To Go. If your bald turkey doesn’t collect feathers fast enough, he’s totally forked. And of course, no themed game roundup is complete without a first person shooter, so we have the aptly named Turkey Shoot. Careful though, they do. And if you’re an elficidal vegetarian who loves rave music but hates Christmas, you’ll love Xtreem Xmas Turkey. As a headless turkey armed with a medieval halberd, you slaughter angry elves, before they slaughter you. And if you’re such a Flash game-obsessed twit that you even get your cooking tips from Flash interactives, we have Cook A Turkey. So have fun, kiss grandma for us, and have a great Thanksgiving. Whatever you’re doing, you’re probably having more fun than the estimated 45 million turkeys being devoured across America today!

A Three-Dimensional Representation
Of A Four-Dimensional Object

Although we originally started our Monday Demotivators to add a little dimension to your Monday morning, we’ve fallen a little flat this week; all we have is this simple game in which you guess the shape of a three-dimensional object as it passes through your two-dimensional field of view. This game will be familiar to anyone who’s familiar with the book Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions, which Isaac Asimov described as “The best introduction one can find into the manner of perceiving dimensions.” This, by the way, was one of my favorite books when I was young. I was admittedly a rather annoying kid; as a seven or eight year old, I had no idea what the big deal was about Roald Dahl and Dr Seuss books, I was busy designing model rockets and wondering what the fourth dimension was like, and if it ever passed through our dimension like the sphere in Flatland. Don’t get me wrong, I was a pretty dumb kid too. Once, after some “preliminary field tests” using the front porch, I jumped off the chicken coop using a large umbrella as a parachute. This didn’t turn out so well, as you might imagine. But since we’ve got you imagining, imagine this: although any discussion of Möbius Strips will inevitably be one-sided, when you start talking about the fourth dimension, things get a little crazy. Try to imagine that if two-dimensional beings see three-dimensional objects the way the characters in Flatland see them (Carl Sagan does a nice 7 minute explanation in this clip), and we see two-dimensional objects the way we do, then four-dimensional beings can see all six sides of an opaque box simultaneously, and in fact, what is inside the box at the same time! Unfortunately the best look we’ll get at the fourth dimension is an animated diagram of a hypercube, like the clip above. My brain just exploded. Hope yours did too. Your day should shape up nicely from here…

Due to the recent discovery of the tragic and perhaps incurable First-Person Shooter Disease (see the clip at left), we’re taking a break from the mindless Flash games usually highlighted in our weekly Monday morning time-wasters to take a more serious look at the damaging effects of video games and the Internet. While in the west we’re still debating whether or not there’s some kind of addictive disorder related to surfing and gaming, the Chinese have not only decided there is, they’ve set up boot camps to deal with the problem. After doing a little informal research, it becomes clear that they’re on the right track. The three most noteworthy gaming-related deaths were all Asian*; a Chinese gamer who killed someone over an imaginary sword, a Korean man who died after a marathon gaming session at an Internet cafe, and a Vietnamese kid who killed a woman for video game money. So let’s look at alternatives to sitting at the computer. How about self-induced hallucinations without drugs? Or better yet, with drugs? If, like me, you don’t feel like actually doing drugs, the book The Beyond Within is a fascinating look into LSD. The BBC video version is also available on YouTube, but if you don’t have 90 minutes to waste this morning, maybe check out this insightful two-minute video from the Canadia Wildlife Service that explores the dramatic effects of various drugs on spiders. And remember, it’s not just video games and drugs that are bad for you, Facebook causes brain damage too.

Who needs drugs or video games when you have ping pong balls?

*Yes, I’m profiling. And they’re good at math too.

This week’s Monday morning productivity inhibitors will take a (ahem) back seat to the fact that the more clever amongst you have sneaked in a four-day weekend. Which means you already are demotivated. And perhaps facing a day on the freeways to get home. If you have a carload of family or friends on a weekend excursion, the way there might not be so bad, but the way back can be excruciating. That’s when a healthy game of Punchbuggy or Padiddle can come in handy. Hopefully though, you’ll be home long before any Padiddling is required. If you happen to have a carload of kids (or immature adults like myself) on board, maybe some classic road trip games like Highway Bingo or Counting Cows are in order. Okay, maybe not so “classic”. Personally, I’ve never heard of “Counting Cows”. Anyway, those are print-it-yourself games; you could always buy some reusable bingo games, they’re cheap, and according to GasBuddy.com, gas prices are $1.50 lower than a year ago, so you should be able to afford a measly $6.91. And if gas prices still aren’t low enough for your tastes, you can always make your own. And finally, for those of you who come here on Monday morning for the silly Flash games, maybe you’d like to vent your holiday road rage (or frustrations with grandma) by playing a nice game of Mad Monday Road Rage or Squash The Granny. Me, I’ll probably be padiddling well into the night, and asking Are We There Yet? Are We There Yet?

Axis if we care. Our plot to disrupt the day you've carefully charted for yourself involves graphic depictions of death, birth, crime, and...Wikipedia?

Do you ever feel overwhelmed with the information and sensory input at your disposal these days? We’re here to help. Overwhelm you more, that is. In our ongoing plot to derail your Monday morning, we’ve touched on fleshmaps, facebook maps, why Ian can’t get a date maps, infographics, flowcharts , and million dollar graphics. So you’d think we’d be done, right? But no. Here we have 50 more examples of ways to visualize data, brought to you by WebDesignerDepot.com. Of all of the examples presented, I probably found TuneGlue the most useful; it visually cross-references musical artists and their work in a very simple interface, with Amazon links. By the way, a lot of those tools in that link made pretty graphs, but were in most cases visualizing things normal people don’t care about. And there’s definitely a flaw in the plan when a graphic actually makes it harder to understand complex information rather than easier. So check out 5,000 years of Middle East history in 90 seconds, or BreathingEarth, where you can watch deaths and births in real time and ponder your emissions. Even better, WorldClock displays everything from oil consumption to US crime stats in real time. And lastly, have you ever wondered what Wikipedia would look like if it were in book form?

Science finally explains why chimpanzees are rarely millionaires.

I’m often accused of being intelligent, but trust me, nothing could be further from the truth. I’m clever and persistent, but frankly, so are raccoons. However I am smart enough, for instance, to not waste a lot of time taking Facebook quizzes that tell me what Jesus thinks of me, or whether or not I’m a potato. First of all, I’m just not that narcissistic; secondly, I KNOW I’m not a potato; and perhaps most importantly: don’t you people realize that the NSA scrapes Facebook data daily to build your citizen profile?!? But back to the original question. This week’s Monday morning time-waster is devoted to intelligence testing and wealth, rather than dumb Flash games. Because until I manage to monetize the process of finding all those silly little games to make you late for work on Monday, you’ll just have to go find your own. So. How smart are you? Well, apparently, not as smart as a chimp. But don’t worry. In spite of books that suggest the opposite, science claims that you don’t have to be smart to be rich. Phew. There’s hope for me. Or is there? I scored fairly high on this Mensa-based test (24 out of 30), but to be perfectly honest, it was patience. Try it. It really doesn’t take that much intelligence, just sheer patience and dedication to an ultimately pointless task. Why the hell they call it the “Mensa Fun Test” is beyond me; they should call it something like the “I Just KNOW I Could Answer These Questions If Only I Had An Attention Span Test“. I’ve always been more intrigued with things like Howard Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences, so I found this test of multiple intelligences much more interesting. It also helped that it didn’t give me a brain-splitting headache and take thirty minutes of my life away. So what kind of intelligent are you? I’ve posted my results here; please take note of the disparity between my interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence. It’s very telling. In fact, my main goal in life is to find a woman with financial intelligence (here’s a quiz), who likes to party and can tell me who I am.

This week, our Monday morning time-wasters get a new spin. Instead of trying to make you late for work, we're here to help you get on the ball.

If you’ve come here for our regular monday morning time wasters, get ready, we’re throwing you a little curve ball. Although our intent is usually to prevent you from being on the ball on Monday, today we’ve mustered up the balls to do exactly the opposite. First, do you even know what a curve ball IS? This amazing illusion demonstrates why they appear to break so hard from the batter’s point of view. It also might make you a little dizzy if you haven’t had your coffee yet. As will the game Curve Ball, which is kind of like playing Pong in The Matrix. The game Dyson Ball kind of sucks, but what would you expect from a vaccuum cleaner promo? At least James Dyson had the balls to manufacture a new kind of vaccuum. Avoiding blue balls is the objective of this game, and just to show that we have a pair, here’s Red Ball, a simple physics-based game which, for no reason we can ascertain, “moos” when you fail. Don’t be cowed. We made it to level 11 pretty easily, if you want the password (just hover here). We’ve probably driven most readers away with that last round of puns by now, but please, sphere not. Before you get your balls in a sling with Sling Jumper, you can draw the line with Scriball. And you’ll probably never get to the bottom of things with GyroBall, but if you do, you can bounce back with Bouncy-Ball.
Our usual Monday morning Flash game distractions, with an especially daunting challenge for our American readers: GEOGRAPHY.

Our Monday Demotivators have previously explored the mystery of why there are so many Flash games in which you do mean things to helpless animals, but you seem to enjoy this stuff so much we’re back with more. First up: Meowcenaries. Like so many of these games, it takes so long to load you’ll be ready to kill by the time it’s ready to play. This game is a little different, by the way, in that the violence is all cat-on-cat. If you’re looking for completely pointless human-inflicted cruelty, you’ll have to go shoot a puppy or something. Don’t get the wrong impression here though, I personally love animals. That’s why this week we’ll give equal time to PETA’s Cooking Mama Kills Animals game, designed to protest Nintendo’s Cooking Mama game, which PETA apparently feels exposes kids to ruthless meat murder unecessarily. Try the PETA game, and tell me which seems more brutal. C’mon. Couldn’t you guys just offer up some vegetarian alternatives? Sheesh. We shouldn’t be surprised though, don’t forget that PETA is run by an insane woman whose will specifies that her body be used for a human barbecue and a line of accessories upon her death. Hmm. Is that even legal? Speaking of legal, we also have for you this morning Pick The Perp. Tips: Junkies always look sleepy, and drunks always look like they’re having fun when they get their mugshot taken. And lastly, as always, we have something for those of you like to actually use your brain on Monday morning. Though oddly, that would contraindicate having read this far. First we have Chroma Circuit, a pattern/color matching game. Pointless, but challenging. And since most of our visitors are American, we have what you will find to be an especially mind-boggling challenge: GEOGRAPHY. Start with (I know, it’s scary) The United States, and move on to the vast and barely charted territories of Canada, South America, Africa, and finally (gasp!) The Middle East.

You'll have to find a way to be late for work on your own from now on...

It occurred to me after the feedback on last week’s Monday De-Motivators that not only was I not succeeding at making anybody late for work on Monday (most visitors are clicking on this stuff after 9pm), but I was getting ahead of the visitors that actually enjoy the games linked to. So this may be the last Monday De-Motivator for a while; as much as I take pride in creating a few Stack The Cats addicts (you know who you are), finding this stuff is exhausting, especially (as I’ve stressed repeatedly) if you don’t like computer games in the first place. It’s kind of like being in AA and having to taste bourbon for a living. For example: Sling Wars, though quite simple, quickly gave me a mild brain-ache. I got all the basic principles right away, but didn’t really feel like spending the time necessary to get a feel for the weapon. I also struggled with the idea that even though I chose to be a Native American, my only choices were to fight in Africa and Europe. Looking at the top scores was quite worrying, by the way. I’m pretty sure “El Turco” – who scored 2,147,483,647 - is someone I probably don’t want to have lunch with. Domino Pressure is a little more my speed. Zero learning curve, immediate results. Though I’m still not clear on how or why a domino would smash a tomato. And GlobalPlayer actually looks kind of interesting, but it gave me a mild panic attack on the first go. My first job as a teenager was in warehousing, and it brought back some of the trauma of that. Now that I’ve steadied my breathing and had a cup of coffee, I might give it another try. And last up: I didn’t know there was a Stoneage Sam One, so I think Stoneage Sam Two: The Ice Age lacked a little of the intended “You loved it so much, we’ve done a sequel” feeling. It was however, quite an insight into a game designer’s mind to have to use a child and a piece of vine as a simple tool to advance the score.
