If the toned-down rhetoric of the McCain campaign in these final days of the election has left you feeling a bit, well, under-outraged, bring back the psychotic, demented rambling of the Palin rollout days with your own attack ad. The creators of the Attack Ad Generator have gone to great lengths to give you all the tools you need: images of all four candidates, a way to add titling, and an impressive selection of drag-and-drop words spoken in a menacing basso voiceover style. I did a quick-and-dirty version here. If you took a little longer than the 5 minutes I devoted to this, you could probably come up with something pretty slick. When you’re finished, there are options for e-mailing and embedding. I didn’t embed it here, those are just screen-grabs at left. Happy slandering!

Does John McCain Need A Bitch-Slap?

Well, not all of them. Somehow, I don’t think the typical female voter in this country is falling too hard for this Sarah Palin thing. In fact, it’s such an utterly transparent move that I’m convinced that it was a short-term media ploy to recapture the press cycle after Obama’s speech, and that there’s going to be a scandal or two, she’ll be discredited, and the McCain campaign will make their final choice later, when it all benefits the campaign. Or maybe McCain is really just not so bright, and forgets there are other ways to destroy your opponent’s campaign. But then, I sometimes have trouble getting my mind around conservative American values. I mean, do Republican women really prefer PINK Women For McCain Mugs, and buttons with frilly patterns on them? Or is that just more luddite McCain campaign thinking? Ironically, their African Americans For McCain (don’t laugh, I know a few personally) buttons are white, and their Arab Americans For McCain buttons are black.

In a blind taste test, which candidate would you choose?

Today Slate had an amusing piece pointing out the similarities between the presumptive Democratic candidate and Pepsi. For the record, someone else pointed this out way back in February. The logo similarity had never occurred to me, even though I had parodied it for the (ahem) donate button (yes people, that thing works, try it some time!) on the upper right of these pages. The design blog Under Consideration/Speak Up digs deeper into the genius of the Pepsi candidate’s marketing materials here. So what would McCain’s beverage brand be? Pepto-Bismol? If you consider the fact that most of his wealth is derived from the wife’s Anheuser-Busch ties, you could pick from the product list. Busch Light? Bare Knuckle Stout? Hurricane Ice? Lost Energy (yes, that’s an actual product name)? Feel free to post your suggestions.

Proving that political campaigns have truly devolved to the level of entertainment, Paris Hilton responds to the McCain campaign’s use of her likeness by announcing she’s running for president. No big deal, I’m running for president too. This got me thinking though, about that rarely-mentioned monster, the Military-Entertainment Complex, which then (curse you, Internet!) led me to spend an hour or so perusing TomDispatch.com, which further led me to impulsively order two books: The Wrecking Crew: How Conservatives Rule , and The Complex: How the Military Invades Our Everyday Lives. Regardless of whether you find those books intriguing, TomDispatch.com (which is a project of the Nation Institute) is a wealth of well-researched journalism, which although possessing a decidedly liberal bent, provides a depth of coverage and reporting that is hard to come by these days.

The GOP wants you to meet Barack Obama - their way

John McCain may be a nearly invisible, doddering old fart (did I really just say may be?) but the GOP is showing a little youthful spring in its step with two new web sites they’ve launched. First, there’s MeetBarackObama.com, which has punchy little headlines for its anti-Obama “news items” like Ich Bin Ein Hypocrite. Perhaps much more clever is BarackBook.com, which mocks Obama’s actual FaceBook page by highlighting his connections with people like William Ayers and Marilyn Katz. Unfortunately for whoever these hip kids of the GOP are, their candidate is still doing more for the Obama campaign than anyone else just by speaking in public.

You would think an old geezer like John McCain would be more sensitive to the needs of old ladies. Needs which don’t include being strong-armed by security for expressing your thoughts (link includes footage as well as story content). Carol Kreck, a 61-year-old librarian from Denver, was waiting in line to attend a McCain “town hall” meeting. At the behest of McCain’s security people, she was cited for trespassing and escorted away because she was carrying a sign that read “McCain = Bush”. She logically pointed out that if you’re a Republican who voted for Bush, why should you be offended by the sign? Kreck was told “You have two choices. You can keep your sign here and receive a ticket for trespassing, or you can remove the sign and stay in line and attend this town hall meeting.”. To her credit she accepted the ticket and a court date.

Speaking the truth isn't always so useful. The Dems need to be a little more republican if they want to win in November.

Only in politics can someone state a simple truth like Wes Clark’s remark that getting shot down as a fighter pilot doesn’t qualify you to be president, and have it dominate the news cycle for days. What this really highlights, in my opinion, is the fact that the Democrats either don’t really care if they win in November, or they haven’t learned a bloody thing from the past eight or so years. Get a message, Dems, and stick to it. Here’s a link to the GOP Playbook (PDF), if you need a primer. The DailyKos even has a searchable web-page version. Get it together, Obamaniacs, get it together. Slate has an insightful piece, The Grunt vs. the Flyboy, that sheds some light on what might lead Wes Clark to wander into such a major message blunder.

Former Bushie-turned-Obamacon Larry Hunter should be selected as Obama’s honorary campaign director for being on record as saying “The Republican Party is a dead rotting carcass with a few decrepit old leaders stumbling around like zombies in a horror version of ‘Weekend With Bernie,’ handcuffed to a corpse.”
