Probably not. But I'm pretty sure the average American voter these days is a cult member.

Although politicians DO seem to enjoy
bizarre rituals like rubbing bundles of cash
on each other’s heads for good luck, this
should not be mistaken for brainwashing.

Although it’s easy to assert the idea that voters are for all practical purposes masses of brainwashed individuals, it’s not often that we question whether politicians have been brainwashed. I mean, although the millions of lobby and corporate interest dollars that wash over a politician in their career is a little like brainwashing, at the end of the day, that shower of dollars is really just good old-fashioned lubrication. Or bribery, or whatever you want to call it. So it’s interesting that in spite of the fact that the recent Rolling Stone piece Another Runaway General: Army Deploys Psy-Ops on U.S. Senators never once used the word “brainwashing”, it prompted enough references to the movie The Manchurian Candidate that experts felt compelled to publicly clarify that Psy-Ops is not “brainwashing”. At no point denying that brainwashing is employed by the military on politicians of course, but at least making that one important semantic distinction. But the truth is, it’s almost universally agreed upon by experts that even if the military were trying to brainwash politicians, it would probably fail, because brainwashing in the familiar sense simply does not exist. Pretty much all the high-profile scenarios typically cited as examples of brainwashing can be explained away as basic forms of coercion and persuasion. If the spy-novel motif of communist-brainwashed operatives that are triggered by simple visual cues like a playing card (as in The Manchurian Candidate) or a copy of Catcher in the Rye (as in Conspiracy Theory) were a reality, probably one of our greatest national liabilities would be John McCain, who has twice run for president, and was a POW in communist Vietnam for five solid years. But the absurdity of that notion just points up the fallacy of the idea that our politicians are literally being brainwashed. Frankly, I’m more worried about the American voter. As a person who might describe himself as residing somewhere in the realm between fiscally conservative Democrat and socially liberal Republican, I’ve almost entirely given up on talking about politics with friends that strongly identify with either party; the conversations tend to be so irrational that they border on delusional. But while perusing material about brainwashing and cult behavior after reading that Rolling Stone piece, I ran across something that describes this tendency in today’s political discourse disturbingly well. It’s the standard “Cult Checklist”. Below is one suggested by professor Eileen Barker, see a broader selection here.

Tell me this doesn’t sound like a typical contemporary Democrat or Republican:

1. A movement that separates itself from society, either geographically or socially;
2. Adherents who become increasingly dependent on the movement for their view on reality;
3. Important decisions in the lives of the adherents are made by others;
4. Making sharp distinctions between us and them, divine and Satanic, good and evil, etc. that are not open for discussion;
5. Leaders who claim divine authority for their deeds and for their orders to their followers;
6. Leaders and movements who are unequivocally focused on achieving a certain goal.

Should politicians that are publicly anti-gay while privately gay be outed? Where's your righteous indignation? I dunno, but your Outrage is on HBO this week.

I missed Outrage when it hit theaters in May, so I’ll be trying to crash a friend’s place this evening to catch it on HBO. The idea of a movie created specifically to out politicians that are publicly anti-gay while privately being gay hits some dynamic chords for me. Conversations about issues related to gay rights are usually a little more nuanced in my circles. I’m not sure I’m behind government approval of gay marriage, for example, but that’s because I’m not sure I believe in government PERIOD. Otherwise, I vehemently support a person’s right to marry whomever they like, regardless of gender, or even species — as long as the other species is consenting. In this case though, it’s a little more cut-and-dried for me. The idea here is exposing politicians’ hypocrisy, not their sex lives, right? How can that be wrong? Well, I wonder how a filmmaker shooting a film like this chooses their “targets”, and what their methodology is in general. But hell. Once they’ve got the goods, it’s a no-brainer, right? They’re just exposing lying politicians, right? As Rep. Barney Frank (whom I previously had no idea was openly gay) puts it: “There is a right to privacy, there’s no right to hypocrisy.” If you’ve read this far, you may be curious as to just who the film exposes. The list includes Florida governor Charlie Crist, who was once a likely pick as John McCain’s running mate; David Dreier, who was once a leading Republican candidate for House majority leader; Ken Mehlman, George Bush’s campaign manager during the 2004 election and former RNC chairman; former New York City mayor Ed Koch; the now-retired Idaho Sen. Larry Craig; Jim McCrery (R-La.), a ranking member of the House Ways and Means Committee who recently retired; Ed Schrock (R-Va.), who retired in 2004; and Shepard Smith of Fox News. Outrage was written and directed by Kirby Dick, who also brought us This Film Is Not Yet Rated, which explored the secretive and inconsistent process by which the MPAA rates films, which the MPAA ironically later pirated for their own use. Outrage mostly has support in the gay community, but what do you think? Should hypocritical politicians be outed this way?

With nothing else to do but sit back and laugh as the press devours his former running mate with plastic forks and knives, John McCain has decided to grow a moustache (see creepy image, left*). “Chicks dig it”, he is quoted as saying – according to an anonymous staffer – allegedly emphasizing his point by making a “V” gesture below his mouth and making a “lah-leh-lah-leh” noise with his tongue. Although he has reportedly been offered a position in the new administration, insiders quoted him as saying “C’mon my friend…who ever heard of a WHITE lawn jockey?” The administration expressed disappointment, but is moving ahead with their cabinet decisions. In other political news: well, let’s face it. There is none. In fact, Dissociated Press is rumored to be announcing the end of their Politics section altogether, as well as their political comic strip. As the site’s chief editor and writer put it: “Bush and Cheney? Now that shit’s funny before you pick up the pencil, but Obama? We’re actually planning to just redirect our domain to the White House so we can get to work for the man.”

Photographer Jill Greenberg caught a lot of flak recently from Atlantic magazine for getting hired to take a cover photo of John McCain, and then intentionally lighting him to look like the pasty, jowly monster that he is. At first I found this amusing, and then I ran across these photos she took of children crying. Now I think she needs a new shrink. Her intent, she claims, was to depict what she says reminded her of the “helplessness and anger I feel about our current political and social situation.” Which she strangely thinks will be remedied somehow by literally taking candy from children and photographing them? Hey Jill! Maybe you could vote or something! The McCain photos were recently pulled from her site, but you can still find some of them here. And then you’ll understand why he pays that $5,000 makeup person everyone’s giving him such a hard time about.

If you can't trust a stick figure, who CAN you trust?

It’s a little frustrating that at a time when America could use some explanations about what’s going on with this historic financial crisis, the people best positioned to help are most likely to lie. However, in a strange fit of honesty, a Treasury spokeswoman quoted in this Forbes.com piece said “It’s not based on any particular data point” – referring to the $700 Billion figure being tossed around – adding: “We just wanted to choose a really large number.” Nice. This Wall Street Journal piece points out that if you want some answers, just ask John McCain. Reminding us that aside from the fact that many of his friends on the Straight Talk Express are the same guys that caused this mess, he has the experience of that Keating Five stuff under his belt. The only really sane and comprehensible explanations I’ve seen though, have come from pretty strange sources. First of all, there’s a sort of stick-figure PowerPoint here. Kind of long, but thorough, and easy to follow. This next one is is likely to have porn ads on the page and link to other rather risque stuff, so click at your own risk. It’s a REALLY long, but is a funny and simplistic explanation posted as a forum thread on Imagechan.com (again, probably NSFW).
