If you’re trying to live green, try shaking the battery habit. Lots of simple devices around the house no longer need to rely on batteries. Consider at least using rechargeable batteries (an option that’s economical too), or really shake things up with a kinetically charged LED flashlight
. Or get all cranky and wound up with a Wind Up 4-in-1 FM Radio, Alarm, LED flashlight and mobile phone charger
or a Wind Up/Solar AM FM Radio
. They even make wind up remote controls. One device that left me a little perplexed was the Solar-powered Flashlight
.
My Electric Daydream

Thursday, August 21st, 2008Charging toward the future
This morning, I went for a trail ride on my hydrogen-powered motorcycle. It was eerie the way animals didn’t run away, due to the fact that the bike is just too quiet. After my ride I hopped into my Tesla (0 to 60 in under 4 seconds!) to head over to the local airport. Thanks to Shai Agassi’s ingenious network of charging stations, I had no trouble “refueling”. Once I got to the airport I hopped into my ElectraFlyer so I could survey our new vertical farming project. It was somehow calming to see dirigibles transporting people through the sky instead of jetliners. After my flight I took the kids to one of the local Halliburton memorials, the thousands of former petrol stations nationwide that have been converted to playgrounds and community centers (sorry, no link for that one yet).
Bicycle Mowers – The Latest in Eco-friendly Lawn Care

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008Two great tastes that taste great together: Lawnmowers and Bicycles
Reduce your carbon footprint and increase your “I am a dork” factor by jumping on the latest clean & green trend: Lawnmower Bicycles. Back in my day, you had to push one of these things around with your hands. Now you can hook your Brill Razorcut Mower to the back of your Lamborghini Forza Mountain Bike
and get the same choppy, uneven looking lawn in a fraction of the time. The main thing I remember about manual mowers was the way they would randomly seize up when you had some good momentum going and slam to a stop with the exact amount of force required to break your wrists. Who knows what the effect would be at 15 mph. Probably multiple contusions and lacerations to the hands and face. To avoid all these potential injuries, you might try one of these innovative devices
instead.
Just Around the Benz: A Petrol-Free Mercedes

Monday, June 30th, 2008Mercedes Benz to offer a petrol-free product line by 2015?
If the buzz is true, Mercedes Benz intends to offer a petroleum-free product line by 2015. Apparently, they’re already making considerable investments to head in this direction. A daring commitment like this should be an inspiration to other manufacturers, and would be quite fitting, since it was Karl Benz who is generally credited with producing the world’s first gasoline-powered auto. The idea of a silent Mercedes reminds of a bit of humor: As a waiter some years ago, I was serving a British couple who were having dinner with a German gentleman. Throughout the dinner the German fellow – who was in town on business with the recently merged Daimler/Chrysler – kept saying things about “Daimler this” and “Daimler that”. Finally the British woman said: “I’m sorry, isn’t the new company called ‘Daimler Chrysler’?” to which the German fellow replied: “I’m afraid the ‘Chrysler’ is silent”. In any case, if an electric Mercedes of the future looks anything like the hybrid F700 pictured here, count me in. This could just be some viral PR; as of this writing there are no official releases from Mercedes Benz, just a lot of industry buzz.
